Chapter 11

STEVE

The fair was closing for the night, but I remained in my car until nearly everyone else was gone. Then I flashed my badge at the pimple-faced teen with bleach-blond curly hair before walking through. I’d asked Hikari to come with me, but she declined. I’d noticed strange things about the woman who shared my bed most nights. Namely, she was rarely out during the day. If I called or texted when it was light out, she didn’t answer until after dark. Had I not seen some crazy crap these last few months, I wouldn’t have thought anything of it.

She’s a night owl, was what I would’ve told myself.

But I’d seen Faith do things and I’d killed an actual effing goddess. And then Faith said vampires were real. As soon as she told me that truth, I guessed Hikari was probably a vampire.

Did I care?

That was to be determined.

Our time in each other’s arms was beyond great, but I’d been tired lately. Before Faith’s revelation that vampires were real, I thought maybe I was suffering from an iron deficiency. Now I wondered if Hikari had been sucking my blood? I knew what vampires in movies did to their victims, but what was the truth?

I had checked to see if there were bite marks anywhere on my skin. I couldn’t find any, but then I didn’t know what actual vampires did. Not only that, but my biggest worry was what she intended to do with me when she was done? Turn me? Kill me? I didn’t like either option. The idea of being undead wasn’t anywhere near the top of my list. Hell, before Faith mentioned that vampires were real, it hadn’t been on my list at all.

Now though, I couldn’t stop thinking about it—about Hikari. What was her end game? Our time together didn’t feel like love. At least for me, it felt more like an addiction. I’d dealt with plenty of that in my life. Still, there was something about her. I was drawn to her, craved her.

Even now, at thoughts of spending time with Hikari, my body ached with need.

“And that’s the problem,” I said aloud, making my way over to the fortune teller tents. They were probably packing up for the night, and I needed to hurry before I missed them.

Grinding my teeth against my thoughts, I picked up the pace.

Many of the tents were already dark, but I continued until I reached the one with the sign that read Madame Tousky. The flaps were closed and tied shut. I walked slowly, moving around to the side of the tent where I knew the fortune teller’s table was set up. Darkness enveloped the area, and I had to close my eyes a minute to let them adjust. When I opened them, I proceeded slowly.

“… Get out there and find me what I need,” came a voice from inside the tent.

I froze, listening for more.

“But, everyone is gone.”

A thwack. Someone’s face was smacked. Hard.

“I don’t want to hear your excuses, girl.
